GOING DEEPER Into Exhibitionism as it relates to Sex Addiction
Exhibitionism
~Exhibitionists, who are almost always males, repeatedly expose
their genitals to unsuspecting strangers in public
as a way of experiencing sexual arousal. The exhibitionist
does not want to 'harm anyone physically'; his act of exposure is
done for his own sexual gratification. His arousal is apparently
heightened by seeing people react with amazement
or shock when he unexpectedly shows his penis.
Exhibitionists expose their genitals
mainly to women and children. One-third of all people
arrested for sex offenses are exhibitionists, and about 20
percent of these are arrested more than once.
Exhibitionism can begin between preadolescence
and middle age, but it occurs most frequently during
the twenties. An exhibitionist has a irresistible, compulsive
need to expose his genitals, and he does so despite
the anxiety, depression, and shame he feels as a result.
Acts of genital exposure often seem to be triggered~ by
feelings of excitement, fear, restlessness,
and sexual arousal. When overcome by these feelings, the exhibitionist
is driven to find relief. Both psychodynamic and
behavioral therapies (particularly aversion therapy) have
been tried with exhibitionists. Although both methods
seem to achieve some success, the results are unpredictable.
