Fetishism
A psychological state in which a nonliving object
serves as a primary source Of sexual
arousal and consummation.
Most fetishists are solitary in their activities,
although in some cases they commit crimes to
acquire their favorite fetishes
(often undergarments, boots, or shoes).
Some fetishists seek sexual partners with particular characteristics,
usually leg amputations or lameness.
Fetishists are almost always male, and the
fetish varies widely from the clearly erotic
(such as an article of women's underwear, especially
underwear that has been worn, stained,
and not yet laundered) to objects with little apparent
connection with sexuality. Fetishism often begins in
adolescence.
Rubber fetishes are particularly popular.
In England the
Mackinfosh Society, named for rubberized raincoats,
provides reassurance for individuals who feel
embarrassed or isolated by their sexual interests. Some
rubber fetishists derive sexual excitement merely from
wearing rubber garments. Other dress in them or want
their partner to wear them during sexual activity because
the garments are necessary for them to become
sexually aroused. One rubber fetishist describes the role
played by rubber boots in his sexual behavior.
I always seem to have been fascinated by rubber boots.
I cannot say exactly when the fascination first
started, but I must have been very young. Their spell
is almost hypnotic and should I see someone walking
along with rubber boots, I become very excited and
may follow the person for a great distance. I quickly
get an erection under such circumstances and I might
easily ejaculate. I often will take the boots to bed with
me, caress them, kiss them, and ejaculate into them.
-(Epstein, 1965, pp. 515-516)
Fetishism is one of the most puzzling of all forms
of sexual behavior. It is chronic, and in some cases the
collection of fetishistic objects is the main activity in the
individual's life, one has been able adequately to explain
fetishists' sexual attachment to diverse objects. Although
theories range from those that stress unconscious
motivation to those that hypothesize impaired
neural mechanisms such as are found among epileptics,
the causes of this unusual type of sexual behavior remain
shrouded in mystery (Wise, 1985).
Fetishists do not often seek therapy. In one large
London hospital only 60 cases were diagnosed in a 20 year
period (Chalkley and Powell, 1983). Of these,
about 30 percent were referred by the courts, mainly
because of their theft of fetishistic objects (see Figure
8-11). About a third of the patients came for treatment
because of anxiety about their fetishistic behavior.
About 20 percent came for other reasons and the fetish
was identified only after they had begun treatment.
Treatment based on learning principles has been applied
to fetishism with some success. In aversion therapy, for
example, the fetish object is paired, either actually or in
fantasy, with an unpleasant stimulus such as electric
shock or a sense of overwhelming embarrassment.
